Our Founding

"This team was founded on memes" - Matt Esser

Team 5740 was founded in 2014 by North Catholic alumni Matt Esser. With 2015 as their rookie season, the team is on its 10th competition season. The team is run through North Catholic High School with the current lead mentor being David Yackuboskey, the Academic Dean and AP Physics teacher. Being run through the school allows robotics to connect the classroom to real-world applications.

Our Values

Teamwork

Teamwork must be a shared value for the Trojanators to find success in the 2024 season. Teamwork must be recognizable at multiple scales within our program.  At the macro-scale, our program must have clear leadership and organizational structures to make the team work. At the micro-scale, our professional relationships must be marked by collaboration, inclusion, equality, and empowerment to ensure our team as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Commitment

FIRST Robotics Competition has been described as “the hardest fun you will ever have.” Success in this environment requires commitment and dedication. Perhaps for the first time in their lives, students are expected to work side-by-side with industry experts and engage the community to create authentic, robust products whether a robot, a business plan or an outreach project. Consistency in scheduling and clarity in communicating with the team mark a committed team member.

Celebrating Success

Teamwork and commitment will lead to success for the 2024 season. It is vital that we value celebrating that success and offer effusive, authentic praise for our success. Success isn’t defined by awards and certificates from winning something alone. Success comes all throughout the year in various ways. Gaining sponsors and maintaining them is a success, building and designing a working robot is a success, figuring out different aspects of code is a success, finishing essays and videos are successes. We will cultivate an atmosphere of positivity as we celebrate success together. Robotics should always be fun!
